Thomas Vanek is an Austrian left winger and alternate captain for the Buffalo Sabres. Vanek was drafted fifth overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, making him the highest draft pick in Austrian history. He had a promising rookie season with 25 goals and 48 points in 81 games for the Sabres. Vanek's best season to date was in 2006, playing in all 82 regular season games and scoring 43 goals, tied for fifth in the league. He was named to his first NHL All-Star Game in 2009 in Montreal where he helped the East to a 12-11 shootout victory over the West.
